Favorites from chef David Burke
With 15 restaurants worldwide, celebrity chef David Burke said his favorite restaurants tend to be unfussy spots with great hospitality and greater bites.
“I like to fly under the radar,” he said. “ … There are several great spots in and near my hometown of Atlantic Highlands that are often left off the food map.”
For breakfast, he’ll often turn to Hudson Cafe (for French toast with bananas or a chicken BLT), or Sissy’s at the Harbor (for the breakfast platter, yogurt or fruit). Whether it’s breakfast or lunch, he loves visiting Big Mike’s Little Red Store, which is a low-key deli “where any of the sandwiches are great.”
For dinner, he likes the intimacy and Old-World Italian cuisine of Christine’s Italian Ristorante, where he orders veal chops or various pasta dishes. If he’s in the mood for Mexican (empanadas or tacos are his go-to), he goes to Chilangos Authentic Mexican Restaurant. But for paella, he’ll stop by Albarino.
